ENGL 355 - American Literature and its Roots This course focuses on Spanish/French/British encounters, with an emphasis on colonial America and how its forms shaped the rise of 19th and 20th century literature. At the center of the course are travel narratives, the sermon tradition, the nature and rise of symbolism, the role of religion in a capitalist society, democracy and questions of race, and theories or art, among others.
