Women’s studies is an interdisciplinary field which studies gender issues including women, their experiences, and their accomplishments. It offers a perspective for redressing women’s subordination as well as for uncovering, understanding, and analyzing the power of women in society.
The women’s studies program offers courses which investigate the roles, contributions, and existence of women in fields of inquiry in which women have been neglected, underrepresented, or distorted. The intent of the program is to make scholarship on women and gender available to students to augment the traditional courses in the liberal arts and sciences.
In addition to the specific courses on women in a variety of disciplines, the women’s studies program seeks to integrate the scholarship on women into otherwise traditional courses, and it offers extracurricular programming on women and gender issues.
The department does not offer a major; however, students may earn a minor in women’s studies.
