MA 553 - Abstract Algebra This course is an introduction to abstract algebraic structures including groups, rings, integral domains, division rings, and fields. The axiomatic approach to building mathematical theory will be applied throughout the course as students explore examples, suggest conjectures, and prove theorems about these structures. Examples such as unitary groups, matrix groups, and polynomial rings will be discussed. Students will delve more deeply into the algebraic structure of our familiar number systems: the integer numbers, the rational numbers, the real numbers, and the complex numbers.
