The University offers a Doctoral Degree Program in Education (Ed.D.) for professionals, currently holding a Master’s Degree, with an interest in learning, researching, and advancing their knowledge about leadership in teaching and learning, human growth and development, and the policies and practices that enhance learning. This innovative program is designed for professionals in leadership roles in public and private schools, colleges and universities, health and human services, corporate development and training, and other settings. The program provides students with a deep understanding of the social, cultural, economic and political influences and forces in society that effect education. The program seeks to prepare leaders who can anticipate the need for the development of effective policies, practices, and interventions based on current research knowledge to promote and enhance leadership in learning.
The doctoral program in education is designed to enable students to complete course work and examinations in three years, to begin their dissertation proposal and research as they progress through their doctoral program of study. The goal of the program is to conduct and complete original research on a topic of local, regional, or national significance.
The program is structured to allow students to engage in doctoral study in their current employment while developing their career goals, meeting their personal aspirations, and expanding their professional network.
- To extend the ongoing conversation about leadership and learning to other disciplines and fields of study to identify what is common in our knowledge and experience of teaching and learning;
- To enable professionals to develop new theories, modes, and constructs of teaching and learning to enlighten our practices and interventions within programs and services;
- To consider the cultural, economic, social, political, and economic influences on our homes, schools, and communities from a variety of perspectives, and disciplines in order to understand the impact on our institutions, organizations, and systems;
- To examine what is actually happening in the lives of others in order to reform our approaches, practices, interventions, and services;
- To research human growth and development, the acts of teaching and learning, and the nature of support and help across a variety of disciplines and professions in order to take an informed approach to understanding of policy reforms;
- To prepare transformational leaders based on current research of teaching and learning, visions for leadership, the nature of change, and creative approaches and policies;
- To extend Rivier University’s unique heritage and mission, to a discussion of transformational leadership, learning, and research to improve the lives of others, especially the poor, the vulnerable, and those in need.
Doctoral Degree Requirements (52 credits)
Required Core Courses (32 credits)
Core courses are taken with the cohort members over three years.
Specialization Courses (12 credits)
In addition to the core doctoral courses related to educational leadership and learning students take three or four electives depending on the credits assigned for a course in their specific area of interest that unifies their overall doctoral study and compliments their dissertation topic and research methodology.
Dissertation Research (8 credits)
The goal of doctoral study is to complete an original independent research on a topic of personal and professional interest and significance. This personal inquiry involves the student in the design, conduct, analysis, write-up and defense of the research.
The student presents the results and findings of the dissertation research at a public defense to the academic community. Subsequent to the public presentation the student participates in a private defense of their research with their dissertation committee. The final bound copy of the dissertation is submitted to the library.
