Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education (Day)

Return to: Academic Programs

Interdisciplinary by definition, the secondary education program enables students to teach in middle schools and high schools. The program includes courses in education theory and practice, as well a a major in a student’s chosen discipline. The program includes 75 hours of field experience, which allows students to observe and participate in secondary classrooms. It culminates in “student teaching,” the internship in which students put into practice what they have learned. Students in the program should want to become passionate teachers dedicated to their disciplines and their future students.

Teacher Licensure

The bachelor degree in secondary education and state licensure, while linked, are not synonymous. To obtain recommendation for state licensure, students must meet all the requirements set forth by the New Hampshire State Department of Education, as well as those articulated in the Secondary Education Program and Student Teacher Handbooks. As of this catalog that includes, but is not limited to, passing scores on both the Praxis I and Praxis II examinations. These examinations require fees above and beyond Rivier University tuition.
