ED 533 - Classroom Management: Secondary Level


Helps teachers to resolve the immediate and long-term problems which adolescent development and behavior brings to the classroom. Views the teacher as a change agent who is able to promote positive interactions among students and form a classroom community that is responsive to and inclusive of all learners. The course provides teachers with skills for proactive (preventative) and reactive (crisis) intervention. Special topics include positive behavioral interventions and support; conflict resolution skills; promoting equity, cooperation, self-esteem, and self-control; understanding the role of the curriculum in these efforts; building a classroom community; working with parents and other resources; and, creating systemic change through the restructuring of school discipline practices. Attention is given to the ethical dilemmas inherent in addressing student behavior.

 

 

Prerequisites & Notes
Twenty-five field experience hours are required.
