ED 522 - Teaching Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders


This course provides an in-depth study of effective teaching methods, materials, and curricula designed to remediate the learning, behavioral, social, and emotional difficulties of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The course includes an examination of informal and formal assessment techniques used to monitor student progress and teaching techniques from diverse educational perspectives (e.g., behavioral, psychoeducational, cognitive). Topics include: discipline vs. punishment; reclaiming youth at risk; strength-based programming; creating behavior support plans; the conflict cycle; escalating and de-escalating student behavior; social skills curricula; self-management techniques; positive behavioral interventions and supports. Participants are required to complete field experience hours and implement a number of course assignments with students with EBD in schools.
